現GAMEFACEのVo/Gジェフ・コーディルの新エモーショナル・ロックバンド”LOW COAST”！2025年3月22日よりimpulse records招聘で八箇所に及ぶジャパンツアーを行います！！ それにともなって、ジェフに来日直前インタビューを敢行！

Yoshi：こんにちは、ジェフ！LOW COASTの来日が決まり、とても嬉しいです！前回、LIVEAGEが招聘した2018年のGAMEFACEの初来日を振り返りつつ、あなたの新しいバンド「LOW COAST」について教えてください。2018年のGAMEFACEの初来日はどうでしたか？ あなたたちは東京2公演、名古屋、京都を回りましたが、どのようなことを感じましたか？
ジェフ：2003年に解散して2012年に再結成したからちょっと不安だったよ。バンドが忘れ去られるのは簡単だからね。僕たちはあまり人気のあるバンドだとは思っていないし、日本に来たこともないからさ。だから、ショーに沢山の人が来てくれたのは本当に嬉しい驚きだった！何十年も僕たちのライブを待ち続けていたたくさんのフレンドリーな人たちに会えて、とても特別な感情が芽生えたんだ。覚えていてくれて本当に嬉しかった。日本のファンは素晴らしくて。僕らの過去ツアーの中でも大好きなツアーになったんだ。
Yoshi：日本ツアーから帰国後、GAMEFACEは何枚かのEPをリリースし、いくつかのライブ(Dr STRANGE RECORDS店内ライブなど)やフェス(Revelation系フェスやフロリダのTHE FESTなど)に出演しましたね。今後のGAMEFACEの活動について教えてください。
ジェフ：GAMEFACEはまだプレイしているよ。お互いに遠く離れて暮らしていて、最近は生活やスケジュールも大きく違うから、あまり頻繁に演奏することはできないけど、集まって演奏する機会があれば、それは大事なことなんだ。このバンドは長い間、僕の人生の大きな部分を占めてきたし、一緒に音楽を作ることができるのはいつも特別なんだ。でも今年は何も予定されてないけどね(笑)
Yoshi：私がGAMEFACEに出会ったのは、1997年に地元（八王子）のタワーレコードで”CUPCAKES”のCDEPを見つけたのがきっかけでした。 そのサウンドに強く惹きこまれましたし、THE PSYCHEDELIC FURSのカバーをするセンスにも驚きました。1996年に私が東京に出てきた頃、東京ではアメリカのEMOバンドが注目されていました。もちろん、REVELATION RECORDSのTEXAS IS THE REASON、FARSIDE、SHADES APART、SENSE FIELDも人気がありました。 そんなタイミングで、1999年にGAMEFACEがREVELATION RECORDSから3RDアルバムをリリースし、日本中でファンが増えていきました。 あなたたちに日本やヨーロッパから注目が集まっていたことを知っていましたか？ 日本のHARDCOREキッズやEMOキッズは、アメリカやヨーロッパのバンドの情報を得るためにあらゆる手を尽くしていました。我々は英語のファンジンを必死に読んでいましたし、その影響で多くの日本のバンドが誕生しました。 今、そのムーブメントの中心にいたことを振り返ると、どのように感じますか？
ジェフ：そういったバンドの横にGAMEFACEの名前が挙がるのは光栄だよ。僕たちはSENSE FIELD、FARSIDE、SHADES APART、TEXAS IS THE REASONと一緒にライブをしながら育ったけど、彼らに本当に憧れてた。彼らは僕の生涯で最も重要なレコードのいくつかを作っている。僕はGAMEFACEを彼らと同じレベルだとは思っていなかったと思うけど、そのシーンの一部になれたことは嬉しいよ。バンドとしてやってきたことすべてをとても誇りに思っているんだ。僕たちはいつも一緒にプレイしたバンドとは少し違っていたと思う。当時は自分たちがシーンに完璧にフィットしているとは必ずしも思っていなかった。でも今はポストハードコア・EMOシーン・POP PUNKシーンの中で僕たちは独自性を持っていることを誇りに思ってるんだ。
Yoshi：GAMEFACEの話これくらいにしまして、LOW COASTがLAで結成された経緯と今までの活動をお教えください。各メンバーの紹介もお願いします。
ジェフ：LOW COASTは、僕がずっとやりたかったバンドだよ。パンクミュージックと同じくらい、クラシックロックやインディーロックが大好きだからね。TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS、NEIL YOUNG、R.E.Mを聴いて育ったから。NADA SURF、DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE、WILCOなどのバンドも大好きだし。僕はソングライターで、とても才能のあるミュージシャンとは言えないかもしれないけど、曲を書いて、さまざまな方法で自分を表現するのが大好きなんだ。自分の曲を創造性の新たなレベルに引き上げてくれる才能あるミュージシャンと一緒に演奏することを夢見ていたんだ。マイク・フラタントゥーノ（ベーシスト）とは、子どもたちが同じ小学校に通っていたときに出会った。彼はナイスガイで、音楽の趣味もよかったんだ。彼は90年代初頭にクールなインディー・ヒップホップ/ロックバンドだったBLACK EYED PEASにいたんだ。マイクは、友人のテレンス・ヨシアキ・グレイブス（日系人ドラマー）とブライアン・ラピン（キーボード）を紹介してくれた。マイク、テレンス、ブライアンは90年代初頭にBLACK EYED PEASでプレイしていていたんだ。現在は彼らは映画やテレビ番組の音楽を制作する会社を経営しているビジネスパートナーでもあるんだよ。彼らはみんなとても才能に恵まれている。4年前、僕は自分が書いた曲を何曲か持って彼らのところへ行った。最初は自分の名前でリリースするソロアルバムになると思っていたが、曲を形にしていくうちに、コラボレーションのような感じになっていった。そこで、サウンドをさらに広げるためにリードギタリストを加えることを提案された。デイブ・ヘマン（素晴らしいギタリスト）がバンドに加わり、LOW COASTが誕生した。 2023年にデビューアルバム「Existing The Dream」をリリースし、2024年にはDIRTY SATELLITESとのスプリット12インチビニールEPに二曲提供したよ。日本のImpulse Recordsからリリースされたばかりさ。3月に日本ツアーをするのがとても楽しみだ。GAMEFACEを見に来てくれた人全員が来てくれたらうれしいな。LOW COASTのライブを体験してほしいんだ。ライブミュージックを演奏することは私の人生の喜びの1つだからさ。何年も経った今でもそれを続けられて僕は幸運な男だよ。

Yoshi：あなたの声は、アメリカの男性シンガーには珍しくスウィートなトーンが特徴だと思います。CANDY（GUNS N’ ROSESにいたギルビー・クラークが在籍）のようなパワーポップバンドや、BIG DRILL CARを彷彿とさせる部分もあります。 スウィートな声といっても、現代のEMOに大きな影響を与えたクリス・カバラ（DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL）やFARのジョナ・マトランガのようなナルシシズムを感じさせない点が大きく異なると感じます。TEXAS IS THE REASONのギャレットが、あなたの歌い方に影響を受けたと読んだことがあります。 あなた自身、自分の声や歌唱法をどう感じていますか？
ジェフ：それはとても嬉しいな！僕が共感する歌手について考えるとき、それは素晴らしい声を持っていることよりも「誠実さ」かな。僕の好きな歌手はマイケル・スタイプとジャクソン・ブラウンだ。僕は彼らの音楽を聴いて育ち、彼らの声には常に強い感情と深みを感じたんだ。それが僕が歌うことを学んだ方法、または歌うようにインスピレーションを受けた方法かな。パンクシーンにハマったとき、ジョン・バンチ（REASON TO BELIEVE、SENSE FIELD）とミロ・アッカーマン（DESCENDENTS）の声にとても刺激を受けたよ。彼らの個性と誠実さが、心を和ませてくれたんだ。僕の声もそう受け止めてもららいたいな。世の中には素晴らしい歌手がたくさんいるけど、いつも正しい音を出しているわけではないとしても、心と魂に響く声に感動するよね！
Yoshi：あなたの他のプロジェクトを紹介してください。OUTSPOKEN(90年代初期メタリック・ミドル・スクールバンド)の凄腕ベーシストと組んだMARCH、FARSIDEのポパイと組んだYOUR FAVORITE TRAINWRECK、さらにはソロプロジェクトについても教えてください。
ジェフ：GAMEFACEは常に僕のメインバンドだったけど、他の音楽プロジェクトにも常に関わってきたよ。僕はたくさんの曲を書いているけど、それらは必ずしもGAMEFACEの世界に合うとは限らないんだ。これらの他のプロジェクトはすべて、僕の創造性を広げる機会を与えてくれたんだ。 MARCHは1995年に私がやっていたバンドで、LOW COASTが今やっていることけっこうにてるかな。MARCHは「Turn」というアルバムを1枚リリースしたよ。COUNTING CROWSやGIN BLOSSOMSのような「カレッジロック」のサウンドだよ。YOUR FAVORITE TRAINWRECKは、FARSIDEの親友ポパイと一緒に曲を書いてレコーディングしたバンドだ。さまざまな影響を受けているからね。パンクロックだけじゃないんだ。
Yoshi：あなたとポパイは、特別な友情があるように感じます。私はFARSIDEの大ファンでもあるので、彼についてあなたがどう思っているのか聞かせてください。
ジェフ：僕はポパイを兄弟のように思っているんだ。若い頃、FARSIDEと一緒にライブをするのが大好きだった。彼らは僕たちの街で一番好きなバンドだったし、みんな大好きだった。僕たちは出会ったときからすぐに意気投合したんだ。大学時代は同じアパートに住んでたんだよ！僕はずっと彼の作曲のファンで、ずっと彼に作曲を続けてほしいと励ましてきたんだ。僕たちは一緒に本当に素晴らしい時間をたくさん過ごしたんだ。
Yoshi：あなたの娘のメロディはCAREER WOMANとして、あなたと同じインディーロックミュージシャンとして活動していますね。 私のレーベルから、日本のletniyとのスプリットテープもリリースしてくれました。 娘がインディーロックをやっていることについて、あなたはどう感じますか？
ジェフ：僕は彼女をとても誇りに思っているよ。彼女はとても才能のあるソングライターで、正しい理由で音楽を作っていると思う。僕と同じように、彼女が音楽を創作の手段にしていることが、本当に嬉しい。バランスの取れた人生には創作活動はとても重要だと思うからさ。CAREER WOMAN は素晴らしいバンドだよ。彼らは最初のフル アルバムのミックスを終えたばかりで、とても良いアルバムなんだ (今年の夏にリリース予定)。今日、妻とCAREER WOMAN の最初のアルバムが GAMEFACE の最初のアルバムよりもどれだけ素晴らしいかについて話していたんだよ(笑)！
Yoshi：今回のLOW COASTの日本ツアーは8公演という、前回の2倍の長さの日本ツアーになります。前回行けなかった日本の小さな都市も回りますが、ツアーに出るというのはあなたにとってどんな気分ですか？
ジェフ：日本をもっと見て、小さな都市を訪れる素晴らしいチャンスだよね。僕は日本と日本人が大好だよ！ツアーは僕の好きなことの一つで、今回はもっと多くの時間を過ごし、より多くの人々と僕たちの音楽をシェアできるのは本当に幸せだよ。
Yoshi：最後に、あなたのファンやライブに来てくれる日本のファンにメッセージをお願いします！
ジェフ：音楽は僕たちが持っている最も強力な言語だと思う。今のような困難な時期に、僕は音楽と僕の音楽コミュニティに頼っているから幸せでいられてるんだ。良い音楽と同じような考えを持つ人々と一緒にいることで、僕たちは元気をもらえる。GAMEFACEのファンがツアーでLOW COASTを応援してくれたら本当に嬉しい。僕たちは、僕たちの音楽を聴くために時間を割いてくれたすべての人を愛してるし、感謝している。君と君の友人が、僕たちが君の街でプレイするときにLOW COASTを観に来てくれたら最高だな。聴いてくれてありがとう。

English Interview
Q1: How was GAMEFACE’s first visit to Japan in 2018? You performed in Tokyo twice, Nagoya, and Kyoto. What did you think?
We didn’t know what to expect since we had broken up in 2003 and reformed in 2012. It’s easy for a band to be forgotten in that time. We don’t consider ourselves a very popular band, and we had never been to Japan before. So it was a nice surprise to see how many people came to the shows. It was so special to meet so many friendly people who had been waiting to see us for decades. It was so nice to be remembered. Japanese fans are the best. It was truly one of our favorite tours.
Q2: After returning from the Japan tour, GAMEFACE released several EPs and performed at several live shows and festivals. Please tell us about GAMEFACE’s future activities.
GAMEFACE is still together. We don’t get to play very often because we live very far away from each other and our lives and schedules are very different these days. But when we get an opportunity to get together and play we cherish it. This band has been a huge part of my life for so long and it is always special when we can make music together. We don’t have anything scheduled for you year.
Q3: I first encountered GAMEFACE in 1997 when I found the CD EP of “CUPCAKES” at Tower Records in my hometown (Hachioji). I was strongly attracted to the sound, and I was also surprised by the sense of covering THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS. When I came to Tokyo in 1996, American EMO bands were attracting attention in Tokyo. Of course, REVELATION RECORDS’ TEXAS IS THE REASON, FARSIDE, SHADES APART, and SENSE FIELD were also popular. At that time, GAMEFACE released their 3rd album from REVELATION RECORDS in 1999, and their fan base increased throughout Japan. Did you know that you were getting attention from Japan and Europe? Japanese HARDCORE and EMO kids did everything they could to get information on American and European bands. We desperately read English fanzines, and many Japanese bands were born as a result of that. Looking back now, how do you feel about being at the center of that movement?
I think it’s an honor to be mentioned next to all those bands. We grew up playing shows with SENSE FIELD, FARSIDE, SHADES APART and TEXAS IS THE REASON, but we also really looked up to them too. They made some of the most important records in my lifetime. I don’t think we considered our band on the same level but it’s gratifying to have been part of that scene. I am very proud of all that we had done as a band. I think we were always a little different from the bands we played with. Back then, I didn’t always feel like we fit into the scene. But now I am proud that we had our own sound and uniqueness within the post hardcore scene.
Q4: Enough with the old stories. Tell us how LOW COAST was formed in LA and what LOW COAST has been up to now. Please also introduce each member.
Low Coast is a band I have wanted for a very long time. Just as important as punk music, I have alway loved classic rock and indie rock. I grew up listening to TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS, NEIL YOUNG and R.E.M. And I love bands like NADA SURF, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE and WILCO. I am a songwriter. I’m not the most talented musician but I love to write songs and express myself in many ways. I had been dreaming of playing with talented musicians that can take my songs to new levels of creativity. I met Mike Fratantuno (bassist) when our children attended the same elementary school. He was a nice guy and had great taste in music. He also came from a similar music scene as he was in the BLACK EYED PEAS back in the early 90s when they were a cool indie-hiphop/rock band. Mike introduced me to his friends Terence Yoshiaki Graves (drummer) and Brian Lapin (keyboardist). Mike, Terence and Brian had also played in the Black Eyed Peas in the early 90s – and currently they are business partners. They have a company that creates music for movies and television shows. They are all so very talented. Four years ago I came to them with a group of songs that I had written. At first I thought it would be another solo album released under my own name, but as we continued to shape the songs it began to feel like more of a collaboration. Then it was suggested that we add a lead guitarist to help expand our sound even further. Once Dave Hemann (and incredible guitarist) joined the band, Low Coast was born. We released our debut album, ‘Existing The Dream’ in 2023, and two singles in 2024. Those two singles are now a part of a split 12” vinyl EP with DIRTY SATELLITES that was just released on Impulse Records in Japan. And we are so excited to tour Japan in March. I know I can’t expect everyone who came to see GAMEFACE, but I hope that many Japanese fans will come to the shows and experience LOW COAST live. Playing live music is one of the joys in my life. I feel fortunate to still do it after all these years.
Q5: I’ve known for a while that you’re into alternative country. I’ve listened to all of your MARCH and solo albums. I feel the influence of RYAN ADAMS and THE JAYHAWKS in the sound of LOW COAST, but your voice is so unique that I can tell it’s your band at first listen. At the same time I feel this is emotional rock! What musical goals does LOW COAST have?
Thank you so much. I love the alternative country sound. I’ve always been a fan of those bands. My favorite band is R.E.M. They are a band that has many influences – from country and folk to indie rock to arena rock. I love that they cannot be simply categorized as one style or sound. I think that’s what inspires LOW COAST. I have a specific style of writing songs, but with this band we can be versatile and explore different ways to deliver each song. It’s always emotional rock. For me, expressing emotion and telling a story are the main reasons for creating music. We plan to keep writing and recording song. Hopefully a new full length album next year.
Q6: Tell us about your first full album released by SPARTAN RECORDS (a label with a great lineup) and your split 12INCH with Japan’s DIRTY SATELLITES.
This is great timing for the Japan tour because Spartan Records just released a new pressing of our full length album – on limited ‘northern lights’ vinyl. We will have it available at our shows. And we’re very excited about the split EP with DIRTY SATELLITES. I’ve been friends with them since the GAMEFACE tour of 2018. They are a great band and I love the songs on this EP. LOW COAST will be playing many songs from our album and the EP plus a few surprises.
Q7: I think your voice has a sweet tone that is rare for an American male singer. There are parts that remind me of power pop bands like CANDY (which includes GILBY CLARKE from GUNS N’ ROSES) and BIG DRILL CAR. Even though you say you have a sweet voice, I feel that you are very different in that you don’t feel the narcissism of Chris Carrabba (DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL) and JONAH MATRANGA of FAR, who have had a major influence on modern EMO. I read that GARRETT from TEXAS IS THE REASON was influenced by your singing style. How do you feel about your own voice and singing style?
That is a very nice compliment! When I think of the singers that I connect with, it’s more about sincerity than having a great voice. My favorite singers are Michael Stipe and Jackson Browne. I grew up listening to their music and I always felt a strong sense of emotion and depth in their voices. I suppose it’s how I learned to sing – or how I was inspired to sing. When I got into the punk scene I was really inspired by the voices of Jon Bunch (REASON TO BELIEVE, SENSE FIELD) and Milo Auckerman (DESCENDENTS). Their personality and sincerity comes through in a disarming way. That’s how I hope my voice is received. There are many great singers in the world but I am moved by the voices that connect to my heart and soul even if they’re not always hitting all of the right notes.
Q8: Please tell us about your other projects. MARCH with the talented bassist from OUTSPOKEN, YOUR FAVORITE TRAINWRECK with POPEYE from FARSIDE, and your solo projects.
Even though GAMEFACE has always been my main band, I’ve always been involved with other musical projects. I write a lot of songs and they don’t always belong in the world of GAMEFACE. All of these other projects have given me an opportunity to expand my creativity. MARCH was a band I had in 1995 that quite similar to what LOW COAST is doing now. MARCH released one album called ’Turn’. It has a “college rock” sound like COUNTING CROWS and GIN BLOSSOMS. YOUR FAVORITE TRAINWRECK was an opportunity to write and record songs with my dear friend Popeye from FARSIDE. It also has a variety of influences. Not just punk rock.
Q9: I feel like you and POPEYE have a special friendship. I’m also a big fan of FARSIDE, so I’d like to hear what you think about POPEYE.
I think of Popeye as a brother. I loved playing shows with FARSIDE when I was young. They were my favorite band in our city and everyone loved Popeye. We really connected when we met. We lived together in the same apartment during our college years. I’ve always been a fan of his songwriting and I have always encouraged him to continue doing it. We’ve had a lot of really great times together.
Q10: Your daughter MELODY is an indie rock musician like you, as CAREER WOMAN. She released a split tape with LETNIY from Japan on my label. How do you feel about your daughter doing indie rock?
I am so proud of her. I think she is a very talented songwriter and she makes music for the right reasons. I am really happy that she has music as a creative outlet like me. I think it’s so important for a balanced life. CAREER WOMAN is a great band. They just finished mixing their first full length LP and it sounds so good (will be released this summer). I was talking to my wife today about how much better the first CAREER WOMAN album is than the first GAMEFACE album!
Q11: This time, LOW COAST’s Japan tour will be eight shows, twice as long as the last one. You will also be visiting smaller cities in Japan that you weren’t able to visit last time. How does it feel for you to be on tour?
It’s a great opportunity to see more of the country and visit smaller cities. I love Japan and the Japanese people. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do and it is a blessing that we can spend more time and share our music with more people this time.

Music is the most powerful language that we have. In troubled times like now, I look to music and my music community to help me stay happy.
